Born in 1954 in Chicago, artist Merry Starr moved permanently to Tucson in 2000. Various classes taken at the Art Institute of Chicago, and years as a job-shop machinist, in concert with her love of nature sparked her interest in combining metals, and semi-precious gemstones which is reflected in her art. While earning a certificate in Field Archaeology and participating in several archaeological digs across the desert Southwest, Merry was inspired by ancient jewelry fragments that occasionally surfaced; sparking an interest in carving shell and inlaying semi-precious stones in those pieces. She also creates and engraves custom metal guitar picks for bands like Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Tartanic, Chris Caffery ; to use and wear as unique pieces of jewelry.
